Arts' Karts Derby Race

Time to register and build your Arts’ Kart!

The Jefferson Arts Committee (JAC) is moving forward with its plans for its first annual "Arts’ Karts" Derby race to be held in conjunction with the 27th annual Jefferson Township Day celebration on July 13 at 12 noon at the Jefferson Township High School. Children 5 to 12 years of age are eligible to participate and will be required to construct their own wooden cars in order to compete in this event; and those karts will be unpowered, relying completely upon gravity to move! Participants must wear their own helmet and will receive an event tee-shirt.

There is no entry fee to participate but there are two options to enter: build your own Kart out of wood according to Cub Scout Push Car general guidelines. However, all four solid rubber ball-bearing hub wheels must be purchased from the Jefferson Arts Committee at $20 for the set (so it is an even race field).

Or purchase an easy-to-assemble Kart Kit which will include all pre-cut and pre-drilled lumber, the four regulation rubber wheels, and assembly instructions at cost of $43 from the Jefferson Arts Committee. Order pick-up will be on June 8 between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm at Camp Jefferson, 81 Weldon Road, Lake Hopatcong.

Each participant will receive a medal, and category trophies for first through third place finishes will be awarded in a ceremony on the main stage on the Jefferson Township High School field at 3:15 pm.

Registration forms are available at www.jeffersonarts.org under Special Features and flyers/registration forms will be distributed throughout the Jefferson Township school system. Registrations with wheel or kart kit orders must be received by June 1st.

If you are interested in more information, wish to become an event sponsor, or wish to volunteer as a timer, starter, judge, kart handler, or race tent administrator contact JAC coordinator George Damerel at 973-697-8898 or gdamerel@yahoo.com

Special thanks to Arts’ Karts Advisor Doug Hahn from Cub Pack Troop 111, Rolf Warncke and the Jefferson Township High School Woodshop Class, MASCAR racer Bruce Sibel, Berkshire Valley Self Storage, and the Jefferson Township Recreation Department. Contributors to this event presently include Home Depot-Dover, Jefferson Lumber, and True Value Hardware of Lakeside.
