Christmas in the Village is suspended this year but other holiday events still await you!

The Jefferson Arts Committee has regretfully found it necessary to suspend their annual Christmas in the Village celebration originally scheduled for Saturday, December 6.  It is the Committee’s intention to bring the event back to the community next year.

However, several Jefferson Arts Committee sub-groups, the township Recreation Department, and the Historical Society are proceeding with special holiday events for you and your family to enjoy in the hope that you will support them.

Ushering in the season, the Jefferson Township Recreation Department will host the annual Lighting of the Township Christmas Tree at the Gazebo located in the Municipal Complex, 1033 Weldon Road at 7 PM on Friday, December 5.  There will be entertainment by a township school chorus, the official lighting of the Township Christmas Tree by the 2008 Citizens of the Year Kathy Valva and Bill Craig, a reading of “The Night Before Christmas” by Council Vice President Brooke Hardy, and the arrival of Santa himself on a Jefferson Township Fire Truck.  Candy canes will be given out and refreshments will be served in the Municipal Building lobby after the lighting of the tree. For information, call the Recreation Department office at 973-663-8404.

On Saturday, December 6, the Jefferson Community Players will perform a special holiday play entitled “A Green Gables Christmas” and Avonlea Tea Service at the Jefferson Township Senior Center, 54 Schoolhouse Road in Milton/Oak Ridge.  Seats for the Tea and Show will be $10 per person with two seatings available: a 10:30 AM show with an 11:30 AM tea or a 1 PM show with a 2 PM tea.  Tea will be served in china cups and saucers with delicious desserts!  All seats for the combination tea/show must be reserved in advance, and mo tickets will be sold at the door. Call Jill at 973-697-2750 for reservations and information no later than November 29.  In addition, there will be a 3:30 PM show performance only with all seats at $5 per person, and tickets will be sold at the door for this stand-alone performance.

The Jefferson Township Recreation Department will host its annual Visit with Santa on Saturday, December 6 from 10 am to 4 pm (Santa and Mrs. Claus will take lunch from 12 noon to 1 PM) in the Community Lodge at Camp Jefferson located at 81 Weldon Road in Lake Hopatcong.  Rudolph will be on hand; and there will be holiday music, gifts from Santa, coloring activities, a craft workshop, story hour, candy canes, and a model train display -- all events are free. Bring your camera for great photo opportunities. The Jefferson Township Middle School Student Council and the Red Cross Club will provide refreshments for a nominal charge while The Jefferson Consolidated PTA will host their Holiday Shoppe in the Recreation Hall where children can purchase holiday gifts for their family and friends.

The Jefferson Township Historical Society will open the Jefferson Township Museum located at 315 Dover-Milton Road in Milton/Oak Ridge for A Gingerbread Christmas on Saturday, December 6 from 12 noon to 4 PM and again on Sunday, December 7 from 1 to 4 PM with tours of the decorated Museum, entertainment and refreshments. On Sunday, December 7, the Jefferson Community Chorus will present their holiday concert “Celebrate the Season” at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 204 Espanong Road in Lake Hopatcong beginning at 3 PM.  The Chorus will perform under the direction of Patricia Cole with Assistant Director/Accompanist Margaret Brandell.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and students and can be reserved in advance by calling 973-697-6659 or 973-601-3028 or purchased at the door.  A reception will follow the concert.  Proceeds will benefit the Chorus and the Lakeland Association of Churches Emergency Fund.

The Jefferson Township Community Band will present “A Christmas Concert" at the Jefferson Township High School auditorium on Friday, December 19 at 7:30 PM. It will feature the 40-member community band -- now in its 15th year -- and the Covenant Brass Quintet. Donations will be accepted at the door. The music selections will feature a broad range of holiday favorites and conclude with an audience sing-a-long.  The High School is located at 1010 Weldon Road in Oak Ridge.  Call Janet at 973-697-8124 for more information.
